The Center of Excellence for Thoracic Oncology at Mount Sinai’s The Tisch Cancer Institute offers just that. Our prevention, diagnostic, treatment, and management services are state of the art. Our world-renowned experts have extensive experience with lung cancer, mesothelioma, and other tumors and conditions of the chest.
We take a team approach to diagnosis and treatment. Thoracic surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists work together to meet your individual needs. We review patient cases weekly, bringing in specialists in radiology and pathology as needed, to determine the best course of treatment for each patient.
Our clinicians and researchers work in partnership to translate scientific discovery into clinical treatments. We have a robust portfolio of clinical trials that feature the latest and most advanced therapies.

Fred R. Hirsch, MD, PhD, and Andrew J. Kaufman, MD, are Co-Directors of the Center of Excellence for Thoracic Oncology.
Dr. Hirsch, Executive Director of the multidisciplinary Center for Thoracic Oncology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, is an internationally renowned authority on lung cancer treatment and research with more than 25 years of experience. He has a special focus on targeted therapies, immunotherapies, and early detection of lung cancer. Dr. Hirsch is also Associate Director of Biomarker Discovery at The Tisch Cancer Institute. He has published more than 500 scientific publications on several scientific aspects of lung cancer and received many national- and international awards.
Dr. Kaufman is Director of The Thoracic Surgery Airway Program and The Asian Thoracic Surgery Program at Mount Sinai, as well as the Associate Program Director for the Thoracic Surgery Residency Program. He specializes in minimally invasive and lung sparing surgery that conserves lung tissue and preserves respiratory function. He has published widely on his lung sparing techniques of Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) segmentectomy for early lung cancers.
