Program Overview

Also known as Urogynecology, this newest subspecialty of Ob/Gyn is now a major focus of Mount Sinai School of Medicine’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Science. Designed to meet the needs of the estimated 20 million women in this country with disorders of the pelvic floor, urogynecology addresses benign conditions with major quality of life importance. Urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse including cystoceles, rectoceles (dropped bladder and rectum) and uterine prolapse, chronic pelvic pain and sexual dysfunction are among the many areas of focus of this subspecialty.

Mount Sinai School of Medicine is proud to have a fully accredited Fellowship Program in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery/Urogynecolgy. This highly competitive program requires three additional years of training after completion of an accredited residency in obstetrics and gynecology or two additional years after completion of an accredited residency in urology. The goals of the fellowship include leading the field through research and innovation with new and improved methods treating benign gynecologic conditions and the training of future leaders in the field.

The fellowship program, under the direction of Charles Ascher-Walsh, M.D., draws from the strengths of four urogynecologists at three centers as well as a fellowship trained female urologist and encompasses the cutting edge of minimally invasive treatments for all aspects of the field. We also regularly collaborate with the faculty of the surgical divisions of Urology and Colorectal Surgery to offer our fellows a complete range of clinical and surgical training. Our graduates have become academic and clinical leaders in our field.
