Benefits Overview

Mount Sinai Medical Center offers the Beneflex Health and Welfare Program to our Faculty and Staff. This program gives employees the flexibility to choose the benefits and coverage levels that are right for their personal lifestyles and family situations. Mount Sinai recognizes that as life changes, so do the benefits you need.

Mount Sinai subsidizes the cost of medical/prescription drug coverage, dental coverage, short-term and long-term disability insurance and life insurance for our non-union employees. Your share of the cost is paid for with before tax dollars unless otherwise noted. Our Union employees receive all benefits according to their collective bargaining unit agreement.

To be eligible for the Beneflex program, Faculty and Staff must be scheduled to work at least 60% of a normal work week.

Medical Coverage

Medical Coverage

Mount Sinai offers several options to help employees best meet their health insurance needs:

  • UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus (PPO) – Basic or Plus
  • High Deductible Health/Health Savings Account - eligible Plan
  • Aetna (HMO)
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield (HMO)
  • HIP (HMO)
  • Decline coverage (only if covered under another medical plan)

Prescription Drug Coverage

Prescription Drug Coverage

Employees are automatically enrolled in the Prescription Drug Coverage (basic coverage) only if enrolled in a medical plan. However, an enhanced drug plan (plus coverage) can be purchased at an additional cost to the employee. The Plans offered are:

  • Express Scripts - basic
  • Express Scripts - plus
  • HDHP Prescription Plan (if enrolled in the High Deductible Health Plan - HDHP)

(If medical coverage is declined prescription drug benefits (basic or plus) is not available)

Dental Coverage

Dental Coverage

Mount Sinai offers a comprehensive dental plan. The benefits include coverage for preventive, diagnostic, restorative, and orthodontic care. The plans available are:

  • MetLife Preferred Provider (Dental PPO) - basic or plus options
  • CIGNA Dental Health Maintenance (DHMO)
  • Decline coverage

Life Insurance Coverage

Life Insurance Coverage

Life Insurance is available at no cost to the employees (basic coverage) as well as the option to purchase supplemental life insurance at an additional cost. This benefit cannot be declined. House Staff Residents receive a flat $100,000 in basic coverage only.

Short-Term Disability Coverage (STD)

Short-Term Disability Coverage (STD)

Short-Term Disability (STD) is available at no cost to the employee. This benefit provides income protection when you become disabled. This is available to employees who are disabled for seven consecutive calendar days and lasts up to 26 weeks.

  • Basic coverage equal to 66 2/3% of base salary up to a maximum of $170 a week.Additional coverage can be purchased at a cost to the employee.
  • Enhanced coverage of 66 2/3% of base salary up to maximum of $1,000 a week

Long-Term Disability Coverage

Long-Term Disability Coverage

If an approved disability keeps you out of work for more than 6 months, this Plan provides you a benefit of 60% of base salary up to maximum benefit of $15,000 a month. The benefit payment received by the employee will be offset by any benefits received from Social Security disability or certain other income sources.

There is no cost to the employee for this benefit.

Paid Visiting Faculty/Associates, Trainees, Temporary Employees and North Shore staff employees are not eligible for LTD.

House Staff Residents receive, at no cost, a monthly LTD benefit equal to 60% of base salary up to a maximum of $3,500.

Vision Coverage

Vision Coverage

The vision care plan can help towards paying for eye care expenses, such as annual eye examinations, eyeglass frames and lenses, or contact lenses for the employee and their dependents. Benefits can be accessed in two ways -- UnitedHealthcare Vision providers or out-of-network providers. The options available are:

  • UnitedHealthcare Vision
  • Decline coverage

Dependent Life Insurance Coverage

Dependent Life Insurance Coverage

Dependent Life Insurance coverage is offered as follows:

  • Spouse: in increments of $25,000 to a maximum of $100,000
  • Child(ren): $5,000 per child or $10,000 per child
  • Decline coverage

Both coverages must be elected jointly.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance coverage is offered as follows:

  • The coverage selected must be equal to the total amount of life insurance an employee elects

Mount Sinai 403(b) Plan

Mount Sinai offers its Faculty and Staff the opportunity to save for their retirement by contributing to a defined contribution plan (403(b)) on a pre-tax basis as prescribed by IRS regulations. For some Faculty and Staff, the 403(b) also serves as the Employer pension plan.

Mount Sinai 457(b) Plan - Supplemental Retirement Program

This is a program that allows additional pre-tax savings for retirement. It is available for faculty and staff earning $140K and above.

College Savings Programs

College Savings Programs

The 529 Plan - New York's College Savings Program

Mount Sinai recognizes the need to start early to save for a child's college education. We participate in the 529 Savings Plan whereby Faculty and Staff can have money deducted from their pay and sent directly to an account set up to save for the child's college education. This money is deducted on an after-tax basis. However, you should consult with your accountant regarding any tax benefits when filing your taxes.

Health Care and Dependent Care Reimbursement Accounts

A reimbursement account provides employees with a way to pay for certain health care and dependent care expenses on a pre-tax basis through payroll deductions. This program is governed by the IRS and is subject to minimum and maximum contribution amounts.

Transportation Reimbursement Incentive Program (TRIP)

The TRIP program is offered to help employees reduce the burden of qualified transportation and parking expenses on a pre-tax basis through payroll deductions. This program is governed by the IRS and is subject to minimum and maximum contribution amount

Tuition Assistance Program

Eligible to employees after one year of employment service. We offer up to $2,400 reimbursement per calendar year. Coverage is available for study at an accredited college or university. It must be a job related degree program or course(s) with a passing grade. To qualify for reimbursement it must be a job related degree program or course(s) in which you receive a passing grade.

Paid Time Off Program (PTO)

The Paid Time Off Program (PTO) combines vacation, sick and personal time into one PTO "bank". Employee classification and length of service determines the amount of PTO days that can be taken annually.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Long-Term Care Insurance Plan is a voluntary group insurance program provided to Mount Sinai's Employee's by John Hancock Life Insurance Company. The benefit will pay for charges incurred for nursing home care, alternate facility care, home health care, adult day care, and informal care for employees, spouses and the parents of both employee and spouse.

Supplemental Life Insurance

Mount Sinai Medical Center offers employees the option to purchase Voluntary Universal Life Insurance for themselves and their dependents. This insurance is individually owned and fully portable if you should leave employment with Mount Sinai for any reason. Universal Life Insurance features a cash value accumulation fund at competitive rates and new hires are given a one-time opportunity to enroll under favorable underwriting conditions, without the need for an exam or additional medical requirements. Premiums for the insurance can be conveniently paid to the EOI Service Company through payroll deduction.

Workers' Compensation

Employees are eligible for Workers' Compensation benefits if they are injured at work.

Employee Assistance Program

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is an employer sponsored program that provides free confidential short-term counseling services to Mount Sinai Employee's and their covered dependents. Counseling services are provided by licensed social workers who are trained to treat individuals who are in need of personal assistance.
