PGY-1: Pharmacy Practice
The Mount Sinai Medical Center Department of Pharmacy Residency Program (PGY-1) has been accredited by the American Society of Health-system Pharmacists (ASHP) since 1979. The Residency Program is structured to allow the resident to focus on their abilities to:

1. Develop the skills and competency necessary to function as an independent pharmacist
2. Provide direct pharmaceutical care for multiple patient populations
3. Develop management and leadership skills
4. Educate other healthcare professionals and patients about drug therapy
5. Evaluate the medication use system for potential sources of error
6. Develop a professional and ethical approach to daily activities

Our program is tailored to meet the residents' needs and interests through a curriculum that combines core rotations with elective opportunities. Residents are given opportunities to present in-services and publish articles in a variety of publications. Residents also provide a service to the Department by acting as the “manager on duty” for alternate weekends and holidays, in addition to performing a variety of other functions. This offers an excellent opportunity to develop the administrative and clinical management skills that are necessary for a successful career in hospital practice.

Residents are members of our Pharmacy & Therapeutics, Medication Use & Safety, and Pharmacy/Nursing Committees. As such, an integral portion of the PGY-1 Residency Program includes longitudinal participation in interdisciplinary committees and professional organizations. Resident membership in the ASHP and the New York City Society of Health-System Pharmacists (NYCSHP) is supported, and attendance at their meetings is expected.

Core Rotations

• Orientation and Didactic Month (4 weeks)
• Administration (2 weeks)
• Drug Information/Policy (6 weeks)
• Internal Medicine (4 weeks)
• Infectious Disease (4 weeks)
• Ambulatory Care (4 weeks)

Elective Rotations (Five 4-week rotations)

• Select two clinical staffing rotations:
  • Total Parenteral Nutrition
  • Adult Intensive Care Units
  • Pediatric/Neonatal Intensive Care
• Select three clinical practice rotations: 
  • Oncology
  • Solid Organ Transplant
  • Critical Care
  • Geriatrics
  • Clinical Trials
  • Pediatrics

Specialty Elective Options

• Additional 4 week elective
• Extend a rotation to 8 weeks
• Additional practice area (4 weeks)

General Information
We accept two full-time PGY-1 residents each year for a period of 12 months. A completed research project and presentation is required for successful completion of the Residency.

Benefits
Funding is available for educational meetings, as well as registration for national and state professional societies.

Residents receive an annual stipend, and are eligible for health insurance, paid time off and educational travel.

Requirements
The candidate must register with the ASHP Matching Program, and provide:

• Application form
• Curriculum vitae
• Letter of interest
• Professional writing sample
• Three letters of recommendation (one academic and one professional)
• All post-secondary transcripts (including previous degrees)

Applicants must be eligible for a New York State pharmacy license, and obtain a New York State Intern Permit prior to starting the residency.
