The Do It! Program is an outpatient program designed for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) or spinal cord dysfunction (SCD). The program is offered by the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Center for the purpose of promoting skills to facilitate community reintegration. These skills are taught by combining individual therapy sessions with informative group classes. Emphasis is placed on health promotion, wellness, and advocacy.
The Do It! Program promotes peer mentoring that reinforces empowerment of individuals with SCI /SCD through a variety of services:
-
Aerobics: Aerobics is a total body, cardiovascular workout that promotes endurance and general well being.
-
Computer Education: This class teaches basic computer skills including office software, Internet and e-mail. Alternative access such as speech recognition software is available.
-
Community Integration: This component provides resources, skills and support to motivate individuals with SCI to become more active participants in the community. Transportation, community resources, travel, sports and leisure activities are explored.
-
Community Luncheon: This program focuses on increasing socialization between inpatients and outpatients in a relaxed environment. An environment is provided where discussion and an exchange of ideas on a variety of topics (such as coping skills, nutrition, and advocacy) take place.
-
Psychotherapy Group: Provides a forum to discuss their feelings regarding the impact of SCI on their lives. The group also provides an opportunity for problem solving, support, and information sharing.
-
Self-Enhancement Group: This class helps individuals learn strategies and exercises to cope with stress, pain and fear. These techniques focus on decreasing mental and physical reactivity to every day stressors.
-
Technology Group: In this group individuals learn about the potential of assistive technology to maximize their ability to function independently within their homes and community.
-
Transitions: This peer support group aims to bridge the transition from inpatient to outpatient.
-
Weight Training Program: This program enables individuals to strengthen intact muscles and increase cardiovascular endurance.
