Speech Language Pathology

Overview

The Mount Sinai Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Outpatient Speech Service evaluates and treats patients with a wide variety of communication disorders, including difficulties with speech, language, articulation, voice, and swallowing. Our dedicated staff works with patients in both individual and group settings, utilizing the state-of-the-art clinical and technological resources of Mount Sinai Medical Center to identify and treat even the most complex communication deficits. We work closely with patients, their families and the patient’s physician to address a full range of needs, including:

  • General communication skills (speaking and understanding language)
  • Developing effective compensatory strategies for communication in cases where standard approaches may not produce desired results
  • Restoring swallowing function
  • Restoring vocal quality, including pitch and projection of voice
  • Developing memory, reasoning and other cognitive skills required for daily tasks

Our patient population includes adults with aphasia (language impairment), dysarthria (speech impairment), cognitive-linguistic deficits, voice disorders, and dysphagia (swallowing difficulties). We provide both individual and group treatment sessions and involve families and caregivers in the therapeutic process.
