Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States and it affects one in three women. February 7 marks the 10th anniversary of the American Heart Association's National Go Red Day. Mount Sinai Heart at The Mount Sinai Hospital will host its annual Community Heart Health Fair on Friday, February 7 at 1468 Madison Avenue at East 100th Street from10:30am to 2:00pm.

The free Community Heart Health Fair at Mount Sinai, one of the largest Go Red events for the last eleven years in New York City, will offer free heart health screenings for blood pressure, total cholesterol including good and bad cholesterol level, triglyceride level, glucose level and body mass index. Also, education and demonstrations on nutrition and diet, diabetes, stress management, smoking cessation, yoga and other relaxation techniques will be offered. In addition, free heart healthy food tastings will be prepared by Mount Sinai Hospital chefs, and guests will receive free giveaways, a goodie-bag, and raffle entry upon completion of their heart health screenings.

"Knowledge is prevention," says Beth Oliver, DNP, RN, Vice President of Clinical Operations for Mount Sinai Heart. "Every woman needs to know her heart health numbers especially blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose level, and BMI."

"Attending a free heart health screening in your community can help arm yourself with the important information you need to prevent heart disease or even assist you in reducing your current level of the disease," says Mary Ann McLaughlin, MD, Medical Director of the Cardiac Health Program at Mount Sinai Heart.

"It is vital to get the word out to women and men in the community about how to prevent and care for heart disease," says Linda Hackett, MPA, Senior Program Director of Community and Government Affairs at Mount Sinai. "Mount Sinai's daily mission is to take every opportunity to help educate our neighbors about their overall health and disease prevention."
