Medical Oncology

One of the three major ways we treat cancer is with medical oncology. At the Dubin Breast Center, we have medical oncologists who specialize in breast cancer. These highly dedicated and trained doctors are devoted to diagnosing and treating breast cancer. From initial diagnosis to post-treatment care, medical oncologists at the Dubin Breast Center offer consultations, second opinions, treatment, and follow-up. We use a various types of medications to treat cancer. The most common are:

  • Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill remaining cancer cells. We give you the medication in many forms including pills, injections, and intravenously.
  • Biologic therapy uses medications or substances made by the body to treat cancer. These medication increase or restore your body's natural defenses against cancer.
  • Targeted therapy is an advanced way to treat specific characteristics of cancer cells. It works by altering how the body responds to these characteristics. For example, some targeted therapy medications can block the growth of new blood vessels. Others can block the chemical signals that allow cancer cells to grow and function.
  • Hormone blocking therapy takes advantage of the way estrogen works. Estrogen binds to the cancerous cells in many types of breast cancers, stimulating them to grow and divide. Anti-estrogen drugs prevent the binding of estrogen. This, in turn, stops the cells’ growth. Sometimes, this therapy kills the cancer cells altogether.
