About Me

Fedor E. Panov, MD, is a board certified neurosurgeon specializing in the surgical treatment of epilepsy and movement disorders. He serves as Director of the Adult Epilepsy Surgery Program at Mount Sinai Health System and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery. Dr. Panov practices general brain and spine surgery, epilepsy surgery, Deep Brain Stimulation as well as Focused Ultrasound and other neuromodulation procedures at several Mount Sinai locations in New York City and Brooklyn, including the Center for Neuromodulation and Epilepsy Center at Mount Sinai West.

Dr. Panov treats patients with epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia, Tourette’s disorder, tics, brain and spine tumors. With extensive training in neuromodulation and minimally invasive surgical techniques, he completed a postgraduate fellowship in Epilepsy Neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco, under Dr. Edward Chang, followed by a fellowship in Movement Disorders Neurosurgery under Dr. Philip A. Starr and Dr. Paul Larson. He earned his undergraduate degree from Schreyer Honors College at Penn State, his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, and completed his neurosurgical residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

As a leader in advanced neurosurgical treatments, Dr. Panov utilizes state-of-the-art technology to provide individualized care for patients with medically refractory seizures and movement disorders. He specializes in Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and Responsive Neurostimulation (RNS), the gold standard treatments for disabling motor symptoms and drug-resistant epilepsy, as well as MR Guided Focused Ultrasound/High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), an incisionless treatment for essential tremor or tremor-dominant Parkinson’s disease patients who have not responded to medication.

Additionally, Dr. Panov employs robotic surgical assistant devices for precise seizure localization and intraoperative MRI (iMRI) technology to enhance accuracy in implantation and laser ablation procedures.

Dr. Panov is also a key neurosurgeon in Mount Sinai’s Enhanced Stroke Recovery Program, where he performs Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) to help stroke survivors regain upper limb function. This breakthrough neurostimulation therapy, when combined with physical therapy, has been shown to generate two to three times more hand and arm function improvement than therapy alone, even in patients who suffered a stroke years prior.

With a significant focus on teaching, Dr Panov has been running the Neurosurgery Pre Residency Fellowship at Mount Sinai for the past 9 years. Many graduates from the program are now successfully completing Neurosurgery Residencies, or working at Attending level positions in the United States.

Committed to both clinical excellence and academic advancement, Dr. Panov has published over 50 manuscripts in leading neurosurgical journals, including PNAS, Neurosurgery, Neurotherapeutics, Interventional Neuroradiology, and the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry.

Dr. Panov is fluent in Russian and conversational in Spanish.

Patient Experience Star Ratings and Comments

The Patient Experience Star Rating reflects our patients’ perception of how well their Mount Sinai provider communicated with them during an office visit. The Star Rating is based on patient responses to three questions on a patient experience survey, a standardized questionnaire sent to verified patients and distributed by a third party vendor, Press Ganey. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score.

Industry Relationships

Physicians and scientists on the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai often interact with pharmaceutical, device, biotechnology companies, and other outside entities to improve patient care, develop new therapies and achieve scientific breakthroughs. In order to promote an ethical and transparent environment for conducting research, providing clinical care and teaching, Mount Sinai requires that salaried faculty inform the School of their outside financial relationships.

Dr. Panov has not yet completed reporting of Industry relationships.

Mount Sinai's faculty policies relating to faculty collaboration with industry are posted on our website. Patients may wish to ask their physician about the activities they perform for companies.
