A nationally renowned researcher in the field of HIV and AIDS, Dr. Aberg has been instrumental in developing national, state, and local guidelines for HIV prevention and the care of persons with HIV. Her reputation as a scientific leader has been well established herself through her ongoing clinical research activities in HIV-related opportunistic infections, vaccine response, and complications of HIV disease, including studies of the pathogenesis of inflammation that contributes to the co-morbidities associated with the aging of people with HIV.
Dr. Aberg serves as Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases for Mount Sinai Health System and Dean of System Operations for Clinical Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine. She created the Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC), successfully recruited basic and translational scientists and established five clinical research sites located throughout Manhattan. Since the COVID pandemic, she has expanded clinical research sites to 7 hospitals throughout the greater NYC region and served as PI for over 20 clinical trials offering treatment and prevention for COVID-19. Her role as Dean is to oversee our mission to conduct NIH sponsored studies, to provide support to junior faculty in all disciplines and form collaborations with translational and basic scientists throughout MSHS. She also serves as an Infection Prevention and Infectious Diseases Expert on the Mount Sinai Health System Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

A thought leader in the study of infectious diseases, Dr. Aberg is a highly sought-after speaker and frequently lectures at international and national HIV/AIDS conferences, symposia, and workshops.  Dr. Aberg served on panels for the New York State Department of Health, the International AIDS Society-USA, and the Department of Health and Human Services. She was also Chair of the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA), an organization representing more than 5,000 HIV providers advocating for policies to ensure a comprehensive response to the AIDS pandemic informed by science and social justice. She also served as the HIVMA representative to the Infectious Disease Society of America’s Board of Directors. She also served on the NIH COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines

Dr. Aberg is the author of more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and has participated in more than 200 clinical trials.  She serves on the editorial board for three infectious disease journals, and is an ad hoc reviewer for more than 20 journals.

Dr. Aberg earned her medical degree from Pennsylvania State University.  She completed her internal medicine residency and chief resident year at the Cleveland Clinic before going on to complete an InfectiousDisease fellowship at the Washington University School of Medicine.  Prior to joining Mount Sinai, Dr. Aberg was Director of Infectious Diseases and Immunology and the Jeffrey Bergstein Professor of Medicine at New York University School of Medicine and the Director of Virology at Bellevue Hospital Center, positions she had held since joining the NYU faculty in 2004.  Previously, she served as Assistant Professor and Co-Director of the AIDS Clinical Trial Unit at the University of California, San Francisco and later as Associate Professor and Director of HIV Services at Washington University.
