The Center for Nursing Research and Innovation
The Center for Nursing Research and Innovation (CNRI) supports rigorous federally funded research led by nurse scientists in the Mount Sinai Health System. The CNRI facilitates multidisciplinary translational research to improve patient care and strengthen the profession of nursing through innovation, collaboration, and the application of research to everyday nursing practice.
Training Programs
Evidence-Based Practice Fellowship
The Evidence-Based Practice Fellowship guides undergraduate students through the process of conducting an evidence-based practice or quality improvement project. Fellows attend didactic sessions, conduct individual projects with clinical preceptors, and present at Nursing Research Day. Supported by the Rudin Foundation, the Evidence-Based Practice Fellowship is administered in collaboration with faculty from the Phillips School of Nursing at Mount Sinai.
Interdisciplinary Collaborative Research (iCORE) Training Program
The Interdisciplinary Collaborative Research (iCORE) Training Program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is a nine-week summer program that provides hands-on and classroom research training for undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, medical, and graduate students. The iCORE program is a collaborative effort between the Institute for Health Equity Research, the Department of Emergency Medicine, and the Center for Nursing Research and Innovation. The program runs from June to early August and offers a unique opportunity for students to gain valuable research skills and clinical experience in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment. Learn more and apply.
Translational Research and Implementation Science for Nurses (TRAIN) Program
Mount Sinai’s Translational Research and Implementation Science for Nurses (TRAIN) Program is a 12-week funded fellowship opportunity for Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students from underrepresented minority communities and disadvantaged backgrounds to develop expertise in translating research into clinical practice. This NIH-sponsored program combines collaborative, multidisciplinary, and multispecialty classroom education with hands-on research experience mentored by experts in the fields of health disparities, hypertension, and other clinical topics central to the mission of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Councils and Committees
Nursing Research Council
The Nursing Research Council (NRC) is a monthly forum for clinical nurses, nurse leaders, and nurse researchers to share updates on new and ongoing research initiatives throughout Mount Sinai Health System. The Council has representatives from the Phillips School of Nursing at Mount Sinai, the Icahn School of Medicine Levy Library, and the Icahn School of Medicine Institutional Review Board.
Nursing Project Approval Council
The Nursing Project Approval Council (NPAC) ensures that all nurse-led evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and research projects are compliant with local and federal regulations governing data privacy and the protection of human subjects. As part of this process, NPAC provides clarification regarding which projects require IRB review. Learn more and submit your project.
Nursing Research Day Planning Committee
The Nursing Research Day Planning Committee meets regularly from April through November in preparation for the Mount Sinai Health System’s annual Nursing Research Day. Committee members are instrumental in selecting topics, themes, speakers, and abstracts for each year’s event. Members also serve as liaisons to promote abstract submissions and advertise the event across the health system and beyond.

Research Roadmap
- The CNRI maintains a designated page on the Mount Sinai Research Roadmap with resources curated especially for nurses. The Roadmap covers a range of topics to support nurses through every stage of designing, conducting, and disseminating evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and research projects: https://researchroadmap.mssm.edu/other-research/cnri/
PINS Journal
- Practical Implementation of Nursing Science (PINS) is an open access, peer-reviewed journal for nurses engaged in clinical practice. The journal encourages contributions from clinical nurses who advance the science and practice of nursing by adopting, refining, or innovating nursing care in the practice setting. PINS is edited by the CNRI and published by Levy Library Press. To read the journal and submit your work, visit www.practicalimplementationofnursingscience.org.
