Rehabilitation and Human Performance

Programs

At Mount Sinai, our expert physical and occupational therapists offer several specialized outpatient rehabilitation programs.

Hand Therapy Program

At Mount Sinai, our certified hand therapists offer specialized services to people with impairments of the upper limbs. We treat acute and post-operative fractures and tendon repairs, in addition to conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, repetitive stress injuries, and more. Our clinicians have expertise in the design and fabrication of custom-made splints, and will work closely with your referring physician. The goal of our program is to help patients regain strength, dexterity, pain relief, and functional independence.

Lymphedema Program

Our Lymphedema program includes comprehensive evaluation, treatment, and support for individuals who have lymphedema. The program is specially designed so patients can be educated through one-to-one training on how to effectively manage their condition independently.

Patients are seen on an outpatient basis for 60-minute sessions, three times per week or as needed depending on the severity of their condition. Our lymphedema-certified physical therapists perform complete decongestive therapy (CDT), which may include:

  • Development of home exercise program
  • Education and assistance with skin care
  • Fitting of compression clothing
  • Manual lymph drainage
  • Multi-layer bandaging

Transition to Fitness Program

The Transition to Fitness Program provides patients with the opportunity to improve cardiovascular health, muscle strength and flexibility, as well as their sense of well-being, through personal exercise programs that are designed by a physical therapist. Our goal is for clients to learn to maintain a training program once they no longer receive care at Mount Sinai.

Vestibular and Balance Disorders Program

Our Vestibular and Balance Disorders Program offers treatment for patients with dizziness or balance problems because of an inner ear or central nervous system problem or due to vertigo.

We conduct a complete evaluation to determine the best treatment plan for our patients and physical therapists use state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment to help patients improve balance, improve coordination, reduce symptoms, and increase overall activity levels.

Wheelchair and Seating Clinic

Led by Jenny Lieberman, PhD, OTR/L, ATP, the Wheelchair and Seating Clinic is dedicated to ensuring that mobility devices and seating systems fit properly and provide comfort and support for all individuals who use mobility technology (manual and power wheelchairs) to move around. Our team is also involved with education and research in the field of seating and mobility, using innovative and evidence-based techniques to provide you with the best seating system possible.
