Vascular and Endovascular Surgery

Your vascular system, also called the circulatory system, carries blood throughout your body. With every beat, your heart pumps blood through a complex network of blood vessels to supply your body with oxygen and nutrients, the vital ingredients your body needs to make energy. Your arteries transport blood to the other parts of your body. Once your body extracts the oxygen and nutrients, your veins bring the deoxygenated blood back to your heart so that your heart and lungs can remove the carbon dioxide that is made when your body uses oxygen, and re-oxygenate the blood so it can go back out to the body through the arteries.

When any part of the vascular system is endangered, you can experience a host of problems. Blood vessels can bulge, forming an aneurysm, or can compress, making it difficult for blood to flow. Your arteries and veins can also become partially or totally blocked. These conditions are called vascular disease.

Why Mount Sinai?

At Mount Sinai, we have a long-standing and distinguished history in treatment of aneurysms and endovascular repair. Michael L. Marin, MD, Chair of the Department of Surgery, and Surgeon-In-Chief of the Mount Sinai Health System, was the first in the United States to perform a minimally invasive endovascular aortic aneurysm repair using an endovascular stent graft device. Since then, Dr. Marin has patented more than a dozen endovascular stent-graft devices, which have been used globally for more than 20 years.

Our large, interdisciplinary team of specialists is well-trained and skilled in the very latest approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease. We are world recognized leaders in the surgical treatment of: peripheral vascular disease, carotid disease, aneurysmal disease, renovascular disease, and venous disease; as well as stroke, stroke prevention, and dialysis access. Each year, our team treats more vascular patients than any other health system in New York City. That means our surgeons have more experience managing vascular conditions like yours than surgeons at other hospitals. But most importantly, you are at the center of all we do. You receive consistent communication and the utmost respect through every phase of diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care.
