State DOH Approves Closure of Mount Sinai Beth Israel - Awaiting Update from Court
Mount Sinai Health System’s request to the New York State Department of Health (DOH) to close the 16th Street campus of Mount Sinai Beth Israel has been approved.
On July 26, Mount Sinai received formal notice from the DOH that the closure plan is approved conditional upon a number of initiatives, including the creation of transfer agreements with other area hospitals, the opening of an urgent care center, expansion of the Hospital at Home program, staffing of the Mount Sinai-Behavioral Health Center, and working with the Fire Department of New York to ensure adequate emergency medical services downtown.
We will continue to work with the DOH and to communicate with our staff and patients at the right times but, for now, nothing will change.
The hospital remains open as it has been while we await an update from the court about their requirement that the hospital remain open.
We will update you again as we learn more from the court system.
DOH Conditional Approval of the MSBI 16th Street Hospital Closure Plan
July 10, 2024
We are working to close the 16th Street campus as soon as possible in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and Court orders. We will update the community and patients once a final closure date is confirmed. After closure, patients will still be able to access care from across the Mount Sinai Health System, including through our extensive ambulatory platform downtown. We are working closely with local leaders and the NYS DOH to ensure a seamless process. To view the closure plan, please click here. In the meantime, MSBI and the Emergency Department remain open and accessible.
