Geriatric Psychiatry
For older adults, Mount Sinai geriatric psychiatrists offer comprehensive and compassionate care for the symptoms of mental health problems that occur in the nervous system. Drawing on extensive clinical experience and emerging research, our team of highly skilled psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, and licensed clinical social workers offer a wide range of treatment options.
In addition, with the resources of the Mount Sinai Health System, geriatric psychiatry patients have direct and convenient access to Mount Sinai specialists for treatment of other pre-existing medical conditions. The Division of Geriatric Psychiatry is also closely allied with the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, which is nationally renowned for its dedication to the study of aging and the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
About Geriatric Psychiatry
This area of psychiatry involves the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of those individuals who are over 60 years of age with various mood, anxiety, and psychotic disorders, as well as dementia. Older adults often suffer from physical conditions in addition to mental health issues, and a geriatric psychiatrist must take into consideration many factors including social networks and home support of the patient receiving treatment. Grief, isolation, financial stress, chronic pain, and lifestyle disruptions can also negatively contribute to the physical and mental health of these individuals. The proportion of people living to be 65 and older continues to increase worldwide, so there is an ever-increasing need for specialists in this field.
