Mount Sinai’s Pediatric Cerebrovascular Disorders Program provides the highest quality treatment for blood vessel malformations in the brains of infants, children, and young adults. Our team of experts, including Co-Directors Alejandro Berenstein, MD and Johanna T. Fifi, MD, and Tomoyoshi (Tomo) Shigematsu, MD, PhD, use minimally invasive procedures to treat complex conditions related to the vascular system in the brain, head, face, spine, and spinal cord in children, including, pediatric vascular malformations (including vein of Galen malformation) vascular birthmarks, pediatric hemangiomas, pediatric vascular tumors, juvenile angiofibromas, and other pediatric vascular abnormalities.

Patients come to the Mount Sinai Pediatric Cerebrovascular Program from all over the country and around the world for vascular lesions of the head and neck. Our team of experts uses a case management approach for each patient.

We treat a variety of conditions including:

• Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) form by a complex short circuit between arteries and veins that causes irregularities in blood circulation.
• Lymphatic malformations occur in the lymphatic system and produce an enlarged mass of excessive fluid and lymphatic channels.
• Vascular tumors typically affect the head and neck.
• Venous malformations are abnormal blood vessels in the venous system.

Our team of experts, including Co-Directors Johanna T. Fifi, MD, and Alejandro Berenstein, MD, and Tomoyoshi (Tomo) Shigematsu, MD, PhD, use minimally invasive procedures to treat complex conditions . Dr. Berenstein has received more 30 distinguished awards for his groundbreaking work, and he has helped develop many of the crucial therapies for previously untreatable diseases. Dr. Berenstein, Dr. Fifi, and Dr. Shigematsu have extended contributions in the description and understanding of the functional vascular anatomy of the brain, head, neck, spine and spinal cord, by creating innovative forms of treatment and developing multiple medical devises to treat various vascular lesions such as vein of Galen malformations, spinal cord arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), and maxillofacial vascular lesions. The Pediatric Cerebrovascular team continues to research for more innovative and better ways to treat vascular malformations.
