Do You Know Your Cholesterol? September is National Cholesterol Education Month

Mount Sinai Health System to offer free cholesterol screenings to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining healthy cholesterol levels

  • (September 01, 2015)

This September the Mount Sinai Health System will host six free cholesterol fairs in honor of National Cholesterol Education Month. Mount Sinai aims to raise awareness and educate our communities and employees on what is a healthy cholesterol level and tips on how to maintain your cholesterol levels.

“Cholesterol disorders are one of the most significant contributors to a person’s risk of a heart attack or stroke.  Knowing your numbers can help you and your health care provider work together to make sure you keep your cholesterol level under control,” says Beth Oliver, RN, DNP, Senior Vice President of Cardiac Services for the Mount Sinai Health System. Mount Sinai Heart provides regular community health screenings, such as the one that will be provided for Cholesterol screening.  Participants can have their cholesterol checked and are also offered information and tools to help manage their risk factors, all in one upbeat and engaging event.”

Cholesterol levels include LDL (bad) cholesterol and HDL (good) cholesterol. An overall level of total cholesterol in blood under 200 mg/dl is recommended. The bad cholesterol should not exceed 100 mg/dl, while your good cholesterol should not exceed 50 mg/dl. Milligrams (mg) of cholesterol per deciliter of blood plasma (dl) is the standard measure of lipid levels.

Each Mount Sinai cholesterol fair will offer community members free heart health screenings for total cholesterol (LDL, HDL, and triglyercides), body mass index (BMI), education about ways you can prevent and reduce your risk factors for heart disease, and share heart-healthy food samples with recipe cards.
