As leaders in minimally invasive surgery, Mount Sinai Health System surgeons use numerous innovative laparoscopic technologies, including the robotic da Vinci®Surgical System. Mount Sinai surgeons utilize the da Vinci Surgical System to perform complex procedures with smaller incisions and less risk of infection, which can result in shorter hospital stays and shorter recovery times compared to open surgery.
The robotic system provides 3D high-definition vision at 10 times the normal magnification through a console, from which the surgeon manipulates mechanical arms and wrists into real-time movements in the body. Robotic surgery provides the dexterity and control of a traditional open surgery, but with the enhanced patient benefits of a minimally invasive technique. The da Vinci Surgical System cannot be programmed or make decisions on its own, and it requires that every surgical maneuver be performed by direct input from the surgeon.
Expanding Robotic Surgery for Multiple Disciplines
At Mount Sinai, the da Vinci Surgical System has seen vastly increased use over the last five years, and our surgeons are committed to its continued evolution. At the Department of Urology, it has been used for thousands of urological procedures including prostatectomies, full and partial nephrectomies, and bladder surgery. More than 80 percent of ENT/Head and Neck Surgery procedures, including thyroid removal, are treated with robotic surgery. Other clinical specialties that employ the da Vinci Surgical System include Gynecology, Thoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, and cardiothoracic surgery.
