What We Do

We serve as consultants and subject matter experts to recommend and establish best practices; advise on policies, procedures, and practices; and provide education to engage the organization in cultural effectiveness, promote positive well-being, enhance the patient experience for all.

Our Structure

A system-wide entity, our division consists of three units and a portfolio of special initiatives:

Units

Health Data, Outcomes, and Engagement Strategy (HDOES)

The corporate unit of the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, HDOES supports MSHS to uphold health equity through the use of data-informed strategies to eliminate avoidable barriers to health care. We aim to foster a culture where everyone feels they can thrive and belong by embracing innovative thinking, emphasizing fairness, and empowering and uplifting the many communities we serve. As organizational consultants and subject matter experts, our team provides education, tools, and resources to support the effective use of data and fair practices to identify gaps in health outcomes and barriers to care.

Patricia S. Levinson Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs (CMCA)

The Patricia S. Levinson Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs (CMCA) of the  Office for Diversity and Inclusion is a key driver of educational excellence, for promoting a diverse physician workforce, and for advancing equitable health care for all. The CMCA advocates for and fosters an inclusive learning environment that engages diversity to strengthen and maintain a positive educational experience for all students. The CMCA establishes and maintains networks that enable collaboration and the ability to effectively meet the diverse needs of all students. The CMCA develops programs and activities that affirm student identity, build community, and cultivate leadership, enabling all students to effectively work across communities and provide outreach to students promoting available programs, services, and other resources to meet the diverse needs of all applicants and students.

Center for Excellence in Youth Education (CEYE)

CEYE maintains a longstanding and well-developed portfolio of youth-focused STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) pathway programs. Each year we help students from grade seven through college prepare for careers in science and health care.  We work with a cross-section of public schools, colleges, and other youth organizations throughout NYC to implement academic year and summer courses and internships. CEYE welcomes all highly motivated students who have a strong academic interest in STEM and a passion for scientific discovery.

Special Initiatives

United in Solidarity (UiS)

UiS is an online platform that serves to support, connect, and inform the MSHS community of efforts to foster a work, learning, and health care environment that provides opportunities for all to thrive. On the website, we feature links to Mount Sinai Today and a health equity resource hub, which is accessible to MSHS faculty, staff, trainees, and students. On the ‘Events’ page, we share upcoming engagement council, ERG, and community events, including ODI’s “Let’s Connect” series. All are welcome!

Community Outreach Event Hub (COEH)

The COEH serves as platform to understand and evaluate MSHS’ community outreach initiatives. The information we gather through the COEH allows the health system to advance community health and health equity by leveraging opportunities to address the needs of the communities we serve and build an extensive network of resources. We encourage all MSHS faculty, staff, and trainees who coordinate community events to visit the Hub and learn more so you can contribute to our ongoing efforts.

Diversity Innovation Hub (DiH)

The DiH is a unique community driven incubator which initiatives, accelerates, and launches innovative solutions to address social drivers of health that perpetuate differences in health outcomes and access to care. The main pillars of the DiH are investing in the community, advancing digital health equity, and creating capacity. Through these pillars, the DiH aims to provide economic opportunity by working with community members to create solutions through technological innovation, entrepreneurship, and design thinking.
