About Vascular Birthmarks and Malformations
There are several different types of vascular tumors, of which hemangiomas are the most common. While the cause of vascular tumors remains unknown, they typically present during the first few weeks of life and form through the abnormal growth and multiplication of the blood vessels. Management of hemangiomas depends on their medical history, diagnosis, and most importantly their location. It is important to note that hemangiomas are unique; while they grow throughout the first year of life, they often diminish in size and color over time. However in many cases involving the head and neck areas, the hemangioma damages the surrounding tissue and requires cosmetic or reconstructive surgery.
Vascular malformations are present at birth and include conditions defined by enlarged or abnormal vessels. The malformations can impact only veins, only lymph vessels, both veins and lymph vessels, and arteries and veins that are missing capillaries in between. Over time the abnormal structures continue to expand causing problems such as disfigurement, chronic pain, recurrent infections, organ dysfunction, and decreased quality of life.
The vascular birthmark specialists at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary (NYEE) are experts in managing and treating these congenital conditions in infants, children, and adults. Patients can expect an individualized plan of care and a breadth of treatment options, including surgery, laser therapy, and medical therapy to not only treat the underlying condition but also maintain optimal cosmetic results.
