Mpox Staff Resources

As we continue to meet the challenge of the mpox outbreak, we want all Mount Sinai Health System employees to remain up to date on the disease and related policies and procedures. This page is open to the public but is intended primarily for the use of Mount Sinai staff.

Mpox Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Guidelines

Health care workers who wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) are not at risk of contracting mpox while caring for patients. 

The following PPE is recommended when entering a room of a patient with known or suspected mpox virus infection:

  • N95 respirator, eye protection, gown, and gloves

Additionally, for all patient care (whether or not a patient appears to be infectious), health care workers should follow standard precautions. These include:

  • The use of gloves in situations involving possible contact with blood or body fluids, non-intact skin, mucous membranes, or other potentially infectious material (e.g., contaminated items) 
  • The use of eye protection, a mask, gown, and gloves during procedures that are likely to generate a splash or spray of blood or other body fluids
  • The use of an N95 respirator, eye protection, gown, and gloves when performing any aerosol-generating procedure
