Fibroid Care Center
Mount Sinai is one of the few health systems nationwide with a dedicated Fibroid Care Center. We provide you the information you need to determine the most appropriate fibroid treatment. Our team of gynecologists and interventional radiologists offers the safest and most effective therapies available, including medical, minimally invasive, and surgical procedures.
Uterine Fibroids
Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that can cause excessive bleeding, pain, and disfigurement. If they are left untreated, you can experience these symptoms until menopause, severely hurting your quality of life. Uterine fibroids affect approximately 25 million women in the United States. About 6 million women seek medical treatment for severe symptoms each year. The National Institutes of Health estimates that of the 600,000 hysterectomies performed in the United States each year, about a third are performed to treat symptomatic uterine fibroids.
Treatment Options
Approximately 80 percent of women with uterine fibroids do not require surgery. Often we only need to monitor and provide medication to alleviate symptoms or inhibit growth. We treat uterine fibroids if they cause abnormally heavy bleeding or other complications due to their size. At the Fibroid Care Center, our highly skilled team of dedicated gynecologists and interventional radiologists offers the latest minimally invasive procedures including myomectomy, hysteroscopy, and uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). We place great emphasis on education and will answer all your questions about treatment alternatives. We work with you to determine the best treatment option for your health and lifestyle.
If we determine, together, that surgery is your best option, we use minimally invasive techniques to minimize discomfort and speed recovery. We complete many of these procedures in an outpatient setting or with an overnight stay in the hospital. We are constantly improving our operating rooms and equipment to offer the very latest in medical technology.
Why Mount Sinai?
The Mount Sinai Health System is one of the world’s leaders in radial artery access for uterine fibroid embolization. Using a blood vessel in the arm provides greater mobility, fewer risks, and fewer complications than the traditional approach using the femoral artery, in the thigh. We have also pioneered use of “ultra-low-dose” radiation exposure during uterine fibroid embolization to improve the safety of the procedure. At Mount Sinai, your safety is our concern.
