Mount Sinai Health System doctors participate in research aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of rheumatic diseases. Some of these studies are:

Rheumatoid Arthritis  

  • Percio S. Gulko, MD, Division Chief and Professor of Medicine, is discovering new genes and biomarkers involved in the regulation of disease severity and joint damage in rheumatoid arthritis. His laboratory is developing new treatments to target these genes with the ultimate goal of achieving better disease control and remission.
  •  Yousaf Ali, MBBS, Associate Professor of Medicine (Rheumatology), is currently the principal investigator on several clinical trials investigating new treatments for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and their role in preventing heart disease.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

  • Ioannis Tassiulas, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine (Rheumatology), is studying the development of a variety of autoimmune disease, including SLE, focusing on the role of cytokines and ways to improve disease control.

Amyloidosis

  • Peter Gorevic MD Professor of medicine (Rheumatology) is a renowned world-authority in amyloidosis and has been conducting clinical research and clinical trials in different forms of this condition for many years.
