Clinical Programs
To help children improve their performance and lead independent lives, the Charles Lazarus Children’s Abilities Center of Mount Sinai offers a variety of programs and technologies. These include the following.
Therapy as Play
Neurological rehabilitation often requires many hours of therapy. Some children are not motivated to complete their therapies, which can slow their progress. We strive to make life-changing neurological therapies that are so much fun our patients never want to stop. Our therapy games include:
- Adaptive gaming: Esports, or professional video gaming, is the fastest-growing sport on the planet. But many people with reduced mobility cannot use standard gaming controllers because of a weak grip and poor finger control. We take special gaming equipment from companies such as Logitech, Microsoft, Statespace, and Warfighter Engaged to create personalized gaming setups for our patients. We use adaptive gaming in our therapeutic approach to teach skills.
- Neuron Up: This digital web platform supports and improves neurorehabilitation and cognitive functions. It allows health care professionals to personalize therapy and track the child’s progress.
- Neuroelectrics: This high-tech company offers non-invasive and high-definition electrical brain stimulation technology for personalized neuromodulation. It lets us measure how your child’s brain works. Then we can make adaptations to improve their ability to move and think.
Play Safety
Our program aims to equip schools with the latest and most innovative ways to identify, assess, and treat concussions. We also want to teach K-12 children and their parents and teachers about concussions. To do this, we provide:
- Concussion Education: We provide concussion resources and education for schools, parents, and children.
- A State-of-the-Art Concussion Clinic: Our team of specialists in concussion care uses state-of-the-art technology to measure concussion symptoms in children.
- Bring Play Safety to You: We work with local schools and community centers to make sure the staff feel fully supported should a child experience a concussion on their watch.

Leveling the Playing Field
We are working to address social and economic inequalities that keep children from meeting their full potential. We build educational programming and collaborate with community partners. Our programs include:
- The Generational Youth Mentors Program: This virtual peer mentoring program offers an innovative and flexible curriculum. The program of study helps us reach students regardless of their ability, disability, gender, socioeconomic status, or cultural and language background. It facilitates relationships among children of different ages while promoting self-esteem and growth. We are working with Social Creatures, The Family Room, and STEAMPark on this project.
- STEMgirls @ STEAMPark, Inc.: Working with STEAMPark, we provide students with technological and educational resources. We are also providing STEMgirls Online Weekly Workshops. These are virtual year-round academic and social-emotional connectedness for girls in 3rd to 8th grades.
