Started by Dr. Eugen Grabscheid in 1989, the Grabscheid Voice and Swallowing Center of Mount Sinai was the first center for the medical treatment of patients with difficulties with their performance voice in New York. Since its inception, our team of experts has helped thousands of New York’s singers, actors, broadcasters, teachers, and other non-performance voice users.

We have consistently been at the forefront of new developments in the medical management of voice and swallowing disorders that affect not only actors and singers, but also anyone who relies on their voice for communication. We continue to develop combined treatment programs that include surgical and nonsurgical therapies, as well as behavioral intervention targeting the health and use of the vocal cords for speaking, singing, breathing, and swallowing. We also provide comprehensive interdisciplinary evaluations in partnership with our teams in gastroenterology, pulmonology, neurology and general surgery, and we work closely with the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery for all aspects of transgender voice. 

Interdisciplinary Approach

At the heart of our Center is an interdisciplinary approach to treating all conditions of voice, swallowing and breathing. At the initial visit the team provides a comprehensive medical and behavioral evaluation of the patients presenting problem. Patients are evaluated and examined simultaneously by laryngologists, speech language pathologists, and teachers of vocal performance as needed to establish a diagnosis and develop a plan of care. This approach of enhancing communication between the disciplines reduces time in the course of disorder management and recovery.
