One in four Americans suffer from a serious chronic or life threatening respiratory disease, from asthma and emphysema to lung cancer and cystic fibrosis. National Jewish Health is the leading and only institution dedicated to research and treatment of respiratory disease for both adults and children. The Icahn School of Medicine is ranked among the top medical schools in the United States and is the medical education and research hub for the entire Mount Sinai Health System, one of the country’s largest not-for-profit, multi-site health care systems. The Mount Sinai Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine division houses innovative, world class programs in sarcoidosis, lung cancer, critical care medicine, genomics and immunological sciences. Together, the Icahn School of Medicine and National Jewish Health bring an extraordinary level of world leading expertise in addressing complex respiratory illnesses.
How Mount Sinai and National Jewish Health Work Together
The Respiratory Institute utilizes the multidisciplinary approach of the National Jewish Health model to create outpatient programs that include pulmonologists and related specialists (in areas including cardiology, allergy, gastroenterology, rheumatology, ENT, and thoracic surgery) working side-by-side to provide optimal patient-centered care. The Respiratory Institute also draws on Mount Sinai’s programs in personalized medicine, genomics, and data-driven clinical protocols to enhance the quality and outcomes of the respiratory disease practice. The physicians at the Mount Sinai – National Jewish Health Respiratory Institute collaborate with physicians at National Jewish Health in Denver. Both entities have jointly developed care pathways to standardize the treatment of patients with respiratory disease and have established regular conferences for physicians from Mount Sinai and National Jewish Health to discuss complex cases. Scheduling and referral centers have been linked to offer seamless, multidisciplinary evaluations for patients to be seen in New York or in Denver. Clinical research portfolios have been integrated and new collaborations have been formed for translational research initiatives. Fellowship training activities have been incorporated into the research and clinical programs of the Respiratory Institute.
Research and Clinical Trials
The multidisciplinary treatments provided by the Respiratory Institute are complemented by robust research activities and a portfolio of clinical trials. Respiratory Institute investigators participate in the COPD Gene Network, which is an NIH-funded consortium to longitudinally evaluate COPD and in the NHLBI PETAL network consortium that is focused on the early treatment of acute lung injury. As a center of excellence for research in sarcoidosis, Mount Sinai has one of the largest programs of its kind in the nation, providing patients with the latest treatment options for the disease.
Coordinated, Collaborative Care
The services offered by the Respiratory Institute are carefully coordinated to ensure the best possible patient experience. Located within the Mount Sinai Health System the team of pulmonologists work closely with specialists in areas, including radiology, cardiology, otolaryngology, and rheumatology to provide the most comprehensive possible treatment plan. Your visits and testing will be guided by personalized itineraries with access to a patient ambassador.
Delivered in an atmosphere of compassion and personalized attention, the care offered by the Respiratory Institute is designed to provide each patient with the advanced therapies and support needed to enjoy the best possible quality of life.
