David S. Mendelson, MD, Chief of Clinical Informatics at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, has received a Grassroots Champion Award in recognition for his exceptional leadership in generating grassroots and community activity in support of Mount Sinai’s mission to establish the use of electronic health records to improve the delivery of care to patients. The American Hospital Association (AHA), in partnership with The Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) announced the 52 award recipients at the AHA Annual Membership Meeting on April 12.

The American Hospital Association Grassroots Champion Award was created to recognize those hospital leaders who most effectively educate elected officials on how major issues affect the hospital’s vital role in the community, who have done an exemplary job in broadening the base of community support for the hospital, and who are tireless advocates for their hospital and its patients.

"It is wonderful to be recognized at a national level for the ongoing work to drive forward the implementation of electronic medical records in a manner that augments the delivery of high quality care to our patients, in an efficient manner," said Dr. Mendelson, also a Professor of Radiology [LINK: http://www.mssm.edu/departments-and-institutes/radiology]. "Simultaneously we must structure our implementation of these products so that they are optimized for the use of the clinician and not seen as an impediment to their workflow but rather as an enhancement."

Dr. Mendelson has been actively engaged with HANYS and the AHA in the area of Health Information Technology (HIT). The efforts of these associations and experts, such as Dr. Mendelson, are meant to ensure that the introduction of HIT solutions is beneficial to patients, providers, and hospitals.
