Dr. Eric Genden: “Human Papilloma Virus Is Being Blamed For Head, Neck And Oral Cancer In Men”
HPV is known for causing cervical cancer in women. But now health experts say the sexually transmitted disease is also responsible for an explosion of oral cancers in otherwise healthy young men. Doctors call it a shocking trend – and say it could be the start of a pandemic. “To see a change in the demographic is concerning because the patients coming in now are really these clean living patients,” said Dr. Eric Genden from The Mount Sinai Medical Center. “Most are professionals and very few of them have any tobacco history.” It's estimated that HPV causes about 70 percent of cancers of the tongue and tonsils.
