Analysis: Goal for Alzheimer's Drug by 2025 too Ambitious?
The U.S. government has set a deadline of 2025 for finding an effective way to treat or prevent Alzheimer's disease, an ambitious target considering there is no cure on the horizon and one that sets a firm deadline unlike previous campaigns against cancer or AIDS. But some experts say the 2025 deadline is unrealistic. "No one set a deadline for the 'War on cancer' or in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We make progress and we keep fighting. The same should be true for Alzheimer's," said Dr. Sam Gandy, an Alzheimer's researcher at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "In my mind, that provides the unfortunate sense that we will have 'failed' if we don't have a cure by 2025."
