Daniel Menaker, former executive editor in chief of Random House, writes about his own cataract experience with Mount Sinai. Dalia Nagel, MD, a Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology, performed the operation in the ambulatory-surgery facility at The Mount Sinai Hospital. In pain later that night, Menaker called the answering service, and Dr. Nagel’s colleague, Julius Shulman, MD, an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, responded 15 minutes later and invited Menaker to his E. 79th Street office at 3:30 am. Dr. Shulman stuck a needle into Menaker's eye to draw out fluid and reduce intraocular pressure. "Better?" Dr. Shulman asked. "Amazing," Menaker replied.
