Andrew Leibowitz, MD Appointed Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Mount Sinai
Dr. Leibowitz succeeds David L. Reich, MD, who was recently named President and Chief Operating Officer of The Mount Sinai Hospital.
In the latest step of a more than 30-year career that began as a medical student at Mount Sinai, Andrew Leibowitz, MD has been appointed Chair of Anesthesiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Prior to this post, Dr. Leibowitz served as Executive Vice Chair of Anesthesiology and is a Professor of Anesthesiology and Surgery; he succeeds David L. Reich, MD, who was recently named President and Chief Operating Officer of The Mount Sinai Hospital.

Dr. Leibowitz earned his medical degree from what was then called the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 1983 and graduated with a BA in Chemistry from Queens College of CUNY summa cum laude. He completed training in Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine and was an attending physician in the Department of Medicine – Emergency Services at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx before returning to Mount Sinai in July 1989, where he has served to present day.
In his role as Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Dr. Leibowitz helped oversee the deployment of a staff of more than 150 personnel across the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, The Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai Queens. He was also responsible for authoring and implementing clinical policies and procedures, patient triage and conflict resolution. His clinical duties include Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine that have entailed a leadership role in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, including significant founding contributions to the Surgical Nutrition Support Service and the Central Venous Access Service. Until taking on his new responsibility as Chair, he was also the Director of the Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine Fellowship. Dr. Leibowitz has authored or co-authored 25 original investigations in several peer-reviewed journals and has contributed to more than 20 other peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Leibowitz is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia and ICU Director and reviews frequently for several other journals, including Critical Care Medicine and Chest.
