Major Depressive Disorder: What You Need to Know

  • (June 12, 2014)

In the United States, approximately 14.8 million adults — or about 7 percent of the adult population — are affected by major depressive disorder each year. This serious depression disorder doesn’t just impact your ability to work, study, eat, and sleep. It’s also the leading cause of disability in people between the ages of 15 to 44. Brian Iacoviello, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai said that CBT and IPT are the gold standards of psychotherapy for major depressive disorder, while other alternatives include group therapy and less traditional and emerging therapies, such as mindfulness therapy.
