Dr. Flores: "Lung Cancer Screening Versus Smoking Cessation?"
When the Medicare advisory panel voted against covering lung cancer screening, smoking cessation was suggested as a better place to put those healthcare dollars. Raja M. Flores, MD, Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at The Mount Sinai Hospital, questioned the advisory panel itself. "Interestingly, the CMS advisers were the same people who spearheaded the debate against lung cancer CT screening and stated that 'there is not a single shred of evidence that CT screening for lung cancer works,'" said Dr. Flores.
