Mount Sinai Announces Formation of The Institute for Advanced Medicine
Michael Mullen, MD to lead Center for Comprehensive Care and Treatment for patients living with HIV / AIDS.
Officials with the Mount Sinai Health System today announced the formation of the Institute for Advanced Medicine, a comprehensive, patient-centered organization designed to provide care and treatment for all patients living with HIV and AIDS. The Institute combines the resources of the Jack Martin Fund Clinic, Mount Sinai Comprehensive Health Downtown, the Spencer Cox Programs, and the Peter Krueger Clinic, with a combined focus on integrated case management involving multiple specialties.
The Institute for Advanced Medicine will be led by Michael Mullen, MD, Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
"By consolidating our considerable resources into one Institute, Mount Sinai will continue to lead the field in treatment, prevention and education around HIV and AIDS, and provide researchers with unparalleled opportunities in the areas of drug discovery and clinical trials," said Dennis S. Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and President for Academic Affairs for the Mount Sinai Health System.
"The Institute for Advanced Medicine will create the most comprehensive clinical program for the care of HIV+ individuals in the state of New York," said Dr. Mullen "By combining the resources of our Mount Sinai Health System member hospitals – Mount Sinai Beth Israel, Mount Sinai St. Luke's, Mount Sinai Roosevelt, The Mount Sinai Hospital and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai -- we will provide the highest levels of medical care to more than 10,000 HIV+ patients, representing more than 100,000 visits per year."
"Our overarching goal is improve quality outcomes across our six clinical sites by bringing the expertise of each facility to the table, and increasing efficiencies through the elimination of duplicated services," said Barbara Murphy, MD, Chair of the Department of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. "Our comprehensive HIV program will improve access to clinical research for our patients and provide educational opportunities for our medical students in HIV medicine, and will make the Institute for Advanced Medicine will be one of the top HIV programs in the country."
