Mount Sinai Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism Institute Breaking New Ground for Patients and Supporters of Type 1 Diabetes Research Programs

On October 23, 2014 the Mount Sinai Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism Institute (DOMI) held a special event entitled Type 1 Diabetes: Breaking New Ground for patients and supporters of Mount Sinai’s type 1 diabetes research programs. The event featured research presentations by three of Mount Sinai’s leaders in the field of type 1 diabetes research. . Dr. Andrew Stewart, MD, the Irene and Dr. Arthur M. Fishberg Professor of Medicine and Director of DOMI (left), Dr. Carol Levy, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Type 1 and Gestational Diabetes at Mount Sinai (center), and Dr. Yaron Tomer, MD, the Lillian and Henry M. Stratton Professor of Molecular Medicine and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology (left) discussed their groundbreaking studies with a group of engaged patients and supporters. Dr. Stewart presented his group’s developments of novel methods to regenerate insulin-secreting beta cells in the pancreas; Dr. Levy shared the launch of Mount Sinai’s Artificial Pancreas Program – the only outpatient artificial pancreas trial in New York State; and Dr. Tomer reviewed his group’s innovative work aimed at blocking the immune attack on the beta cells. Attendees participated in a lively discussion following the presentations about the future of type 1 diabetes research, progress towards a cure and Mount Sinai’s role in the fight against diabetes.
