Dr. Eric Smouha: "Daily Checkup: Summer's the Time for a Rise in Swimmer's Ear"
Pool parties and beach vacations bring with them a summertime scourge: swimmer’s ear. “Summer is the peak season for swimmer’s ear, which is an inflammation of the skin of the ear canal,” said Eric Smouha, MD, Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “Basically, it’s caused by water in the ear canal, because where there’s entrapped water, there’s inevitably bacteria, which can cause an incredibly painful infection because there’s not much room to accommodate the swelling.” Some 2.4 million cases of swimmer’s ear were diagnosed in this country in 2007 alone."
