Dr. Alejandro Berenstein: “Babies with Rare Condition Receive Life-Saving Treatment”
A blood vessel defect called arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is rare and dangerous. Babies who have it are often born in heart failure because so much blood is rushing through the AVM. The malformation can rupture and bleed causing a stroke. That is what Alejandro Berenstein, MD, is trying to prevent. “If we don’t treat it early it can produce significant brain damage,” says Dr. Berenstein. He performed a procedure to block the blood vessels feeding the AVM in the brain of 2-year-old Hector by injecting a kind of medical crazy glue into his malformed blood vessels. Learn more
