"Epipens Can Stay Potent For Years After They Expire" - Jacob Passy
EpiPens had 90% of the stated amount of the medication up to 29 months after their expiration date, according to a study published Monday. "My bottom line is that I have to tell my patients to honor the expiration date," said Scott Sicherer, MD, division chief of pediatric allergy and immunology at Mount Sinai. But experts said that an expired EpiPen could still be used if someone has anaphylaxis. "If someone is having anaphylaxis and only has access to an expired device, I would tell them to go ahead and use it," Dr. Sicherer said. "Even if it is not full potency, it is better than nothing in an emergency."
