If you use a neti pot because you have a cold, sinus infection, or allergies, the water you use absolutely needs to be sterile, says Benjamin Tweel, MD, an assistant professor of otolaryngology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Still, Dr. Tweel supports their use. “They work really well for a variety of complaints and I recommend them [to patients] pretty much every day for one purpose or another,” he says.
