"The Opioid Crisis" - Marla Diamond
We are waiting for official word from the White House about the declaration of opioids, which kills so many Americans every day, being a public health emergency. Michael Fiori, MD, director of addiction services at Mount Sinai Beth Israel and senior faculty of psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai said he wants to hear the President declare opioid addiction as a chronic disease like cancer or diabetes. “This will help to combat the enormous stigma that people with addictions feel.” He added that Americans need better access to drug treatment programs. The President is expected to declare the crisis a public health emergency, which is a partial measure to fight the opioid epidemic. It does not require the same financial commitment as a national emergency declaration.
