"Fragmented Care Tied to IBD Readmissions" - Diana Swift
Fragmented care occurs in more than 25 percent of readmissions for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and drives worse outcomes, underscoring the need for more integrated patient management care, researchers said. Asked for his perspective, Ryan Ungaro, MD, assistant professor of medicine and gastroenterology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, who was not involved in the research, said, “This paper highlights a very challenging issue in IBD care. Fragmentation presents obstacles and challenges to both patients and physicians and can lead to delays in treatment plans and duplication of testing and procedures.” He added, "This study now demonstrates that this health systems issue is associated with adverse outcomes and should now prompt a close examination of how to improve care coordination and continuity for our IBD patients.”
