Rita Goldstein, PhD, professor of psychiatry and neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, chief of Brain Imaging Core, and director of the neuropsychoimaging of addiction and related conditions research program, and Anna Zilverstand, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, found wide-spread impairments in brain function that were independent of the substance to which an individual was addicted. These alternation affected many important basic psychological processes, such as attention, learning, decision making or the ability to inhibit impulsive actions.
