"Nasal Brush Successfully Tests For Genetic Biomarkers Of Mild, Moderate Asthma" - Katherine Bortz
A genetic biomarker of asthma collected from a nasal swab can accurately diagnose asthma in patients with mild to moderate symptoms. The identification of this biomarker using the swab can also differentiate between asthma and other respiratory diseases, including allergic rhinitis, upper respiratory infections and cystic fibrosis. “Our nasal classifier of asthma represents a novel path to diagnosing asthma with a simple nasal brush,” said senior author, Supinda Bunyavanich, MD, MPH, associate professor of genetics and genomic sciences, and pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “It takes seconds to perform a nasal brushing, and interpretation of data gained from this brushing can be automated based on an algorithm we identified, yielding an output of asthma or no asthma.”
