Roxana Mehran, MD, an internationally renowned researcher in interventional cardiovascular disease at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, will be awarded the 2018 Wenger Award for Excellence in Medical Leadership from WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease at the 2018 Wenger Awards in Washington on May 7.

The annual Wenger Awards recognize individuals and organizations for their extraordinary contributions to women's heart health. They were named after Nanette Kass Wenger, MD, a pioneer in women’s cardiology.

“Dr. Roxana Mehran has helped transform interventional cardiology and advanced gender-based understanding and opportunities in medicine—two of the hallmarks of a worthy recipient of this award," said Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, Physician-in-Chief of The Mount Sinai Hospital and Director of Mount Sinai Heart.

Dr. Mehran is Professor of Medicine, Cardiology, and Population Health Science and Policy, and Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Research and Clinical Trials at The Zena and Michael A. Wiener Cardiovascular Institute of the Icahn School of Medicine. In that role, she has developed a globally respected data and clinical coordination center. A prolific researcher and author, she has served as principal investigator for numerous large global studies, developed risk scores for bleeding and acute kidney injury, and authored more than 800 peer-reviewed articles.

Dr. Mehran has received numerous prestigious awards, most recently the 2017 Bernadine Healy Leadership in Women’s CV Disease Award from the American College of Cardiology. She is co-founder of the Academic Research Consortium and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions Women in Innovations, and a founding physician of the Cardiovascular Research Foundation, where she is currently Chief Scientific Officer.

“I am honored to receive the Wenger Award,” said Dr. Mehran.  “It is wonderful to see that women are being recognized for their leadership roles in advancing women's heart health. Even though coronary mortality rates in America have declined overall, heart disease and its precursors are on the rise among young women between the ages of 35 and 55, and women cardiologists and researchers are well poised to address this problem head on.”
