"The EKG Is Only A Start. Apple Wants To Seize The Market For Patient Monitoring" - Casey Ross
Apple’s EKG app stands out in a maze of health technologies for its ability to monitor a user’s heart function around the clock from any location, generating a stream of data that could personalize cardiology care and lead to the development of more effective treatments. The ubiquity of Apple’s products – more than 1.3 billion of its devices are used worldwide – gives the company the ability to scale its products rapidly and to experiment with a range of solutions in patient monitoring and diagnosis. The potential has already been demonstrated through products developed using ResearchKit, an open source that allows health providers to study different types of patients and build apps to help treat or manage their conditions. Yvonne Chan, MD, PhD, director of the center for digital health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, used ResearchKit to conduct the Asthma Mobile Health Study, one of the first efforts to carry out clinical research entirely by smartphone. Dr. Chan said the technology demonstrated enormous potential for improving the efficiency and reach of research.
