"Schizophrenia May Be Tied to Brain Structural Heterogeneity" - David Douglas
Schizophrenia appears to be associated with increased inter-individual differences in brain structure, suggesting that it is a highly heterogeneous disorder, researchers say. A paper published in JAMA Psychiatry found that a higher polygenic risk score for schizophrenia was associated with a mean decrease in thickness in frontotemporal cortex. Sophia Frangou, MD, PhD, professor of psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, said that the paper “is a great example on how large datasets can assist us in exploring key questions in schizophrenia." Dr. Frangou added, “The authors demonstrate substantial variability in brain structure in patients which may be one way of approaching the issue of inter-patient variation in clinical outcomes.”
