Suffering Joint Pains from Osteoarthritis? Some Do’s and Don’ts on Getting Relief
Osteoarthritis has no cure, so easing pain is key. A 2015 review of 54 studies found that an exercise program was as effective at easing pain and improving function in knee osteoarthritis as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. “If someone’s never really exercised before, I’ll send them first to physical therapy to make sure they’re using proper techniques,” said Joseph Herrera, DO, professor and system chair of rehabilitation and human performance at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “If they are already active, I’ll print out a home exercise program for them to try first to see if it can help.”
