Primary care providers should consider referring “appropriate” obese adolescent patients for bariatric surgery, according to a new review article published in the medical progress section of the Journal of Pediatrics. “Obesity and associated comorbid conditions are a major threat to our youth” and “the question remains, ‘Are we doing enough research to manage obesity?’” wrote Mark Sperling, MD, professional lecturer in the department of pediatrics in the division of endocrinology, diabetes and bone disease at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and colleagues.
