Arthur Smerling, MD, Is Named Chief of Pediatric Critical Care at Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital

Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital has appointed Arthur Smerling, MD, a leading expert in pediatric critical care, as Chief of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine in the Jack and Lucy Clark Department of Pediatrics.  

Dr. Smerling brings a wealth of experience to Mount Sinai, having served on the faculty of Columbia University Irving Medical Center for more than 38 years, most recently as Professor of Pediatrics there. He is board certified in pediatrics, anesthesiology, and critical care medicine.

Lehman Professor of Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Chair of the Jack and Lucy Clark Department of Pediatrics for the Mount Sinai Health System, and Pediatrician-in-Chief of Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Smerling’s clinical focus is pediatric critical care, with a particular focus on pediatric cardiac critical care. His research interests include pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, and the well-being of providers. 

Dr. Smerling earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Hospital Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Resident in pediatrics. He then pursued a residency in anesthesiology at Columbia University Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in pediatric anesthesia and critical care at Children’s Hospital Boston, where he was Chief Fellow. 

He is a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the New York State Societies of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.
