In 1973, the Levy Library was officially dedicated to Gustave and Janet Levy, whose remarkable contributions helped shape Mount Sinai’s academic mission. By 1975, the reference deck had become a bustling hub of knowledge—card catalogs, reference desks, and quiet study corners were the tools of the time.

The 1980s brought rapid transformation. From the circulation desk that served as the heart of the library to the innovative Mediagraphies displays in 1981, Levy was constantly evolving. By mid-decade, dedicated staff were pushing forward new ways to support Mount Sinai’s academic needs. And in 1987, the debut of AV samples and the first computer menus marked the beginning of our digital future.

As we celebrate #LevyLibrary50, we’re also recognizing National Library Week, honoring the legacy and ongoing impact of libraries as essential spaces for discovery, community, and lifelong learning.

Mount Sinai researchers, led by Dr. Robert Rosenson, have found that the RNA-based therapy zodasiran significantly reduces multiple harmful cholesterol and lipid levels in individuals with mixed hyperlipidemia, a major risk factor for heart disease. The ARCHES-2 clinical trial showed that zodasiran reduced triglycerides by up to 74%, lowered LDL cholesterol by up to 20%, cut non-HDL cholesterol by up to 36%, and decreased remnant cholesterol by up to 82%. Unlike traditional treatments, zodasiran works by silencing the ANGPTL3 gene, offering longer-lasting effects with fewer doses.

Published in The New England Journal of Medicine and presented at the European Atherosclerosis Society Congress, this study highlights the potential for RNA-based therapies to expand treatment options beyond statins. Researchers suggest that further studies could confirm zodasiran’s role in reducing cardiovascular risk and improving patient outcomes.

Results from the ECLIPSE trial, which was presented by Dr. Gregg W. Stone at #ACC25, found that using intravascular imaging (IVI) to guide stent implantation in severely calcified lesions is safer and more effective than stenting guided with conventional angiography alone.

“These results extend the strong recommendations from recent U.S. and European societal guidelines that intravascular imaging with either optical coherence tomography (OCT) or intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) should be routinely used during complex coronary stent procedures, including severely calcified lesions," says Dr. Stone.

As we celebrate #LevyLibrary50, we’re also proud to recognize National Library Week—a time to honor the transformative role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in our communities.

Interestingly, 1954 was also the year the National Book Committee was formed to inspire a culture of reading in America, leading to the first-ever National Library Week just a few years later in 1958.

This shared legacy of promoting literacy, discovery, and lifelong learning is deeply embedded in our roots—and still drives us forward today.
